Minimum Requirements

  • Applicants for this position must have a suitable National Diploma in Horticulture (or equivalent            qualification) or a closely related field.     
  • Bachelor of Technology or Advanced Diploma in Horticulture will be an added advantage.
  • Must possess at least 1+ years of technical/professional experience in the relevant field in a tertiary institution.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in managing students and diverse user departments.
  • A strong passion for technical investigations, troubleshooting, repairs, and creative development of landscapes and horticultural facilities.
  • Hands-on technical troubleshooting capabilities and knowledge of horticultural infrastructure and equipment
  • Good communication, effective people management skills, and adherence to workplace etiquette.
  • Aptitude to transfer technical knowledge to students
  • Improve and engage in professional development activities.
  • Good track record or relevant experience and desire to advance technical development in the department.

Duties

  • Reports to the Head of Department
  • Provides oversight of the assigned horticulture facilities in the Department.
  • Provide technical support to academic staff
  • Provide resources and technical support to students for their practical’s and projects.
  • Ensures plant growth facilities are well controlled, are maintained in full functional state and safe working condition to facilitate a disciplined and efficient execution of student’s practicals, tutorials, and lectures.
  • Serve as an invigilator for practical assessments and tests as and when required
  • To carry out plant decorations and landscaping when required.
  • Carry out maintenance of technical equipment, including repair and changing of components.
  • Supervision of General Assistants working at the horticulture practical teaching facility.
  • Maintain an inventory of all equipment and liaise with the University Asset Management Unit.
  • Assist with administrative duties and carry out other duties as prescribed by the Head of Department.
